Courier Insurance explained
Courier Insurance is a type of commercial vehicle insurance. It covers drivers of vehicles, who move parcels and packages in return for payment. Hence courier insurance companies tend to refer to this a “hire & reward” cover.
It’s for people whose job involves driving a work van to make multiple deliveries to various different locations, usually in a fairly local radius. Deliveries typically include everyday items such as takeaway food and parcels.
It’ll cover the loss, or damage of your courier van due to theft, fire, or vandalism; legal fees, personal accidents, and medical expenses in the event of a motoring incident. It provides cover should your business activity cause damage or loss to a third-party. It could also protect the goods that you transport, depending on the cover you select.
It’s important to obtain the right type of insurance for your work as a courier. Firstly, to make sure you stay on the right side of the law, but also, to make sure that you’re properly protected should you need to make a claim.
What level of Courier Insurance do you need?
Courier insurance always starts with one core cover: motor insurance. There are three levels of cover to choose from.
• Third party only (TPO) – This covers any damage you cause to other people and their property. It doesn’t cover repairs to your own van. This is the minimum cover needed (by law).
• Third party fire and theft (TPFT) – The same as TPO, but with cover for your work van if it’s stolen or damaged by fire.
• Comprehensive – This includes the cover you’d receive with TPFT, with added protection for your own van if you’re involved in a collision that’s your fault.
What does Courier Insurance for Vans cover?
Exactly what your courier insurance covers will depend on the level you choose and what optional extras you add.
As standard, it’ll typically cover the loss, or damage of your van due to theft, fire, or vandalism; legal fees, personal accidents, and medical expenses in the event of a motoring incident.
We recommend that delivery van insurance includes public liability insurance to protect you and your business should you injure someone or cause damage to their property during the course of your work. For example, a member of the public trips over boxes you’ve unloaded from your van onto the pavement and breaks their wrist.
And because you’re transporting other peoples’ goods, you’ll need goods in transit insurance cover too. This covers the items you’re transporting should they be lost, stolen, or damaged while in your possession. Without it, you would be personally liable for covering the cost of replacement.
Our friendly team will guide you through the cover included within your delivery van insurance policy, giving you complete confidence that you’re fully protected as you go about your business.
What else should you consider with Courier Insurance for Vans?
There maybe one or two extras you’d like to add to your insurance for your self-employed courier van, to ensure it’s tailored to your exact requirements.
Quite sensibly, you may wish to add courier van breakdown cover to your policy, to help minimise the disruption to your business activity should your van need assistance.
Perhaps you have more than one courier van and would like us to quote for courier fleet insurance. If so, employers’ liability insurance may also need to be added. This is a legal requirement if you employ anyone else as part of your business operation – even on a temporary or casual basis.
Maybe you want the reassurance of knowing you’ll have a courtesy vehicle if your delivery van is off the road, windscreen cover, or legal protection should you ever need it.
Whatever your requirements, our specialist brokers will equip your van with courier insurance that’ll give you complete peace of mind.
